A Tribute to Mrs Sonia D. Wilson

In Loving Memory of Sonia Wilson

Sonia Wilson was part of The Gareth Gawaine Forbes Foundation (The GGFF) from the very beginning—called, committed, and faithful to the work long before most could see how far it would reach.

In early 2024, as Founder and President of The GGFF, Natasha Forbes-Matheis prayerfully considered who should form the inaugural Board of Directors, Sonia’s name rose clearly to the top. What began as a simple Sunday-morning text message quickly became something far greater. Within minutes of receiving the invitation, Sonia responded with a heartfelt phone call. She shared that she had been praying and seeking God’s direction for what she should do next, and she believed—with complete certainty—that the message was confirmation of His answer.

Sonia had a deep compassion for underserved communities and a particular passion for educating young people. Though she hesitated briefly about the title of “director,” she never doubted the call to serve. With faith and humility, she stepped forward and immediately immersed herself in The GGFF’s effort of “Educating Today’s Youths for a Brighter Tomorrow.”

She became a cornerstone of the Canadian arm of the Foundation and a steadfast presence across all of our work. Though technology was not her comfort zone, Sonia taught herself how to navigate Zoom so she could attend every meeting. She was tireless in fundraising efforts and took personal responsibility for monitoring The GGFF’s social media platforms—always with excellence in mind. It was common to receive a mid-week phone call from Sonia, gently offering thoughtful suggestions about how a post or page might better reflect the organization’s purpose and calling.

She checked in often.

She worked quietly but persistently.

She gave generously of her time, energy, and wisdom.

Above all, Sonia devoted herself fully to what she believed God had asked her to do.

Because of her service, countless young people—particularly in The Philippines and Jamaica—will have greater access to education and opportunity. The ripple effects of her faithfulness will be felt for years to come.

Sonia will be profoundly missed by The GGFF family. Yet her legacy lives on—in our programs, in our vision, and in every child whose future is brighter because she said “yes.”

Sonia, you lived well.

You walked good.

Now rest in peace, and take comfort in the arms of your Lord and Savior.

Forever in our hearts.Forever part of The GGFF story.
